Frequently Asked Questions
General Questions
What is SyncPlanet ?
SyncPlanet is a file synchronization service developped by a company located in Marseille, France, that allows animation studios to seamlessly share their data between their sites across the world.
Are your services available in my country?
SyncPlanet is available worldwide. Our services are hosted on high availability machines which can be located wherever you choose.
How does SyncPlanet work?
SyncPlanet transfers data between storage units in your sites and a central hub.
How do I set up SyncPlanet?
You will find instructions on setting up SyncPlanet for your organization here
I’ve encountered an issue, how do I fix it?
SyncPlanet is continuously being updated and maintained and we guarantee direct support within 48 hours by contract. You can reach our support via email support@syncplanet.io. If you require a more hands-on assistance, we offer support days as part of some subscription plans.
What’s the hub?
The hub is the central server sitting at the heart of the star network that handles the file transfers between your different storages.
What are storages?
The storages are network attached storages (NAS) connected to the Internet. They contain the files you want to synchronize and to share among multiple storages.
How do you ensure that my files are secure?
Since SyncPlanet works as a star network dedicated to your project, files are only shared between your storages and your hub. We can never directly access your data. Furthermore, your hub uses the SSH communication protocol to access your remote sites and transfer the files in an encrypted manner, using strong encrytion dedicated keys, generated on your servers.
Can I cancel my subscription at any time?
Yes, we offer a hassle free cancelation at any time.
Can I request additional features?
Absolutely, we are constantly updating SyncPlanet and adding new functionalities.
Can I request a test hub to try it out?
Unfortunately, we do not offer to set up test hubs. We offer a demo where you can test some of our features.
Technical Questions
What kind of hardware do I need to run SyncPlanet ?
You will need a server for your hub, and a Network Attached Storage (NAS) for each of your sites. As different studios have different needs, the storage capacity and bandwidth of those servers will depend entirely on your own needs.
How do I choose the hub's storage capacity
The storage needed by the hub will vary depending on the size of the total data you need to synchronize as each synchronized file is stored on the hub, which acts as a storage cache. If your project grows with time, the storage space required will need to correspond to the total size of synchronized data at the end of your project.
How do I choose the hub's network bandwidth
As the hub is the center of its star network, connectivity is important and must be chosen carefully to get the best results. As such, the adapted bandwidth is the sum of all your site's bandwidths. For example: if you have 5 synchronized storages capable of uploading at an average of 25MB/s, you can you choose a 1Gbps bandwidth hub as this bandwidth won't be a limiting factor in transfer speed.
How do I choose the hub's other hardware
Storage performance: You may have a choice about the storage performance (type of disks, ssd, cache size etc). As the files to read and write are transfered through the network, the network is the limiting factor here. So high performance I/O is not mandatory.
CPU: Some options like data compression/decompression on large files need a bigger CPU. If this is important to your project, you should choose a hub's CPU accordingly. If not, a regular basic CPU should be enough.
RAM: the file transfer is not RAM-consuming. This means you only need enough RAM to run the operating system and a few hundred megabytes for the process.
Is there a size limit for file transfers?
Limits are imposed by your own system and the network you are using.
Do I have to use port 22 when opening ports for the setup process?
No, this is the default port but you may choose another port.
Can I use a different directory for my files?
The hub can run multiple SyncPlanet instances, as such you can use different directories.
